Microids and its strange love affair with niche, old-school licenses continues with the news that the publisher has yet another Asterix the Gaul video game in the works — Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram from Hibernia is currently in production at Osome Studios, with a PC and console release scheduled for the fall.
Following on from 2021 side-scrolling brawler Asterix and Obelix: Slap Them All, the new title The Ram from Hibernia is a top-down action-adventure, and sees the two rebellious friends on a mission to recover a sacred golden ram, stolen by the nefarious Roman Empire. Explore the land of Hibernia, (which we know as Ireland today), lay waste to armies of Roman soldiers, and save the day for the land’s oppressed people.
As you can see from the trailer above, The Ram of Hibernia is packed out with the franchise’s trademark, fist-flying chaos. Studio Osome also promises to mix some exploration and puzzle-solving elements into the adventure, along with some magic and alchemy from Asterix & Obelix’s druid pal, Getafix. The adventure will also support four-player co-op action, though this trailer only features two selectable characters, which seems a bit of a missed opportunity.
It has to be said that Asterix the Gaul is something of a specific franchise for a specific audience — ala Microids’ other current point of interest, The Smurfs. Still, at least those faithful Asterix fans are eating well for the time being. Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram from Hibernia launches this fall on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms.
