Marvel’s Avengers: Spider-Man Being Developed, But Not Coming Before Summer

The Marvel’s Avengers team is working on the promised PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man character, but he won’t be coming to the game before Summer 2021 at the earliest.We spoke to Crystal Dynamics head of studio Scot Amos about the game’s 2021 roadmap – which makes no mention of Spider-Man – and asked about when we might see the character appear. “I can tell you that, formally, officially, people are working on him right now,” Amos replied. “So it is still on our roadmap for the future.”

The roadmap (below) shows a number of additions, working from this month to Summer and ‘Beyond’. That roadmap ends with the War for Wakanda expansion, and the addition of Black Panther to the game’s roster – and Amos made clear that Spider-Man would not arrive before Black Panther.

That roadmap does make clear that it doesn’t include all in-progress work, but Amos said it represents what the studio can fully commit to in the near-term. “But there are people working on [him],” he reiterated, “and we still fully expect Spider-Man to come to PlayStation.” Amos gave no indication of a timescale for that, however.

Marvel’s Avengers’ version of Spider-Man was first announced in August of 2020, and his exclusivity to PlayStation was the cause of some controversy. Since launch, Avengers has been criticised for a lack of meaningful new content, with new playable heroes a major part of those complaints.

Today sees the release of the game’s second new hero, Hawkeye, alongside the Future Imperfect campaign, and next-gen versions of the game. Crystal Dynamics also told us that the game would not be going free-to-play anytime soon.
